Maybe Dave was turned into a bird as a way to grow some sort personality trait? Either that, or to be sheltered from the outside world… Or like maybe someone like BEC NOIR (since there are wolves in the original Disney) cursed him because he couldn’t kill him - Bro died protecting him - and the final thing Bro did was give Dave a chance to go back to normal, if he somehow learned to overcome his fear for the outside, or learned to truly love himself (and someone else maybe??)

John is no BELLE THOUGH, THE WHOLE THING HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH OBVIOUS BEAUTY IN MY HEAD…
I used to have this really stupid Beauty and the Beast aU with John and Davesprite, and John was literally HOMESTUCK, until dad left for this crazy baking fest and got lost, AND THEN HE WAS DRAGGED INTO THE CASTLE OF HUGE MONSTER BIRD DAVE (i don’t remember what happened for him to be a bird), exchanging dad’s freedom for his own
So they start of LIKE IN CANON, all mean and bickery and hating each other’s faces BUT EVENTUALLY THEY FIND A COMMON PASSION IN MUSIC, and have chirp/piano duets, play hide and seek, have pranks and EVEN AWESOME BAKING
but then as the story follows Dave eventually releases him and is left alone to die, but of course JOHN LOVES HIM AND THERE’S A HAPPY ENDING, except dave stays a bird because I don’t like the transformation scene in the original movie !:
